Thursday (September 11, 2008)

Thursday went sooooo smoothly until about an hour before we were scheduled to leave for south Florida. As Wes began packing the Sentra (fuel efficiency won over comfort this time), Casey had what can only be described as a major meltdown. Hysterical sobbing for 45 minutes straight ensued and was only, finally, quelled by the ultimate combination: Shrek, applejuice, teddy bear, blankie and the lazyboy. With Casey calm, I was able to nurse Jonathan into a food coma and stick him in the carseat before he knew what hit him. I distracted Casey with a cell phone for a few minutes and transfered Shrek to the portable player in the car. A quick sprint back into the house for coffee and Doritos and we were off!

Get this; the drive was great! Jonathan fell asleep by the time we left the neighborhood and Casey conked out about 1/2 an hour into the trip. Wes and I chatted the whole way about mindless nothings & Ms. Izzie snuggled in my lap. We hit zero traffic and neither of us needed to stop and pee.

When we got to my parents, I was sure all hell would break loose. History has taught me that regardless of how smoothly the drive goes, getting the kids back to sleep once at Grandma and Grandpa's is always a challenge of epic proportions. Or not. Grandma Diane wasn't home yet (she ran to the market), so Casey cuddled with Grandpa Don for a few minutes and then willingly (happily, even) went straight to bed. Mom got home a few minutes later and played with Jonathan. When she'd had her Grandma fix, she passed him off to me for nursing and then.... he went straight to sleep!

We stayed up and chatted for just a little bit and then everyone turned in. As it were, all good things come to an end, so Jonathan did not sleep through the night and Casey woke us all bright and early at 5:ooAM. I think it still counts as a pretty fabulous day, though.

The pictures are of the boys sleeping on the ride down and then Casey and Grandpa cuddling at 5AM and Jonathan snoozing in the swing very early Friday morning.

Sweet photos!

All things considered, I agree: it WAS a fabulous day! Glad it wasn't too traumatic.

Thanks! What's that saying... prepare for the worst and hope for the best? Hah!
